5 Things That Take Me To My Happy Place

Loving this weeks Moments That Define Life’s – Listable Life topic. I am normally a pretty happy person, but these things just take me to an even happier place.

1. A Good Book – If it’s lying on the beach or just on the couch, a good book makes me happy. Or sad, when the story ends or a character dies. At the end of The Millennium Series  (The Girl With A Dragon Tattoo) I actually cried, because the books were finished and I enjoyed the world Steig Larsson had created so much, I didn’t want it to end. There really isn’t much better than a good book to take you away. Here are a few of my recent favorites and all time favs:

2. Skype – Seeing as I am roughly 8,233 miles (13,246 kilometers) away from my family and friends, Skype makes that distance feel a bit shorter. Spoke to my friend Stacy this morning.  Me, starting my day, and she, ending hers. So weird to think about, but so amazing that we have modern technology to connect us. Especially, when one of us is having a bad day.

3. Screen Shopping – I don’t know if this is an actual term, but I like to use it. Loads of my time is spent day dreaming at places like Net-A-Porter, where I can’t afford anything but dream about wearing their gorgeous frocks. For example:

If I was going to the Grammy’s this weekend, I would be on the best dressed list for sure, wearing one of these…

Only $8,800 / R66,800

$7,500 / R56,900

$8,000 / R60,700

Or on my 30th birthday, looking fabulous…

$700 / R5,300

$3,900 / R29,600

$5,100 / R38,700

4. Reality TV – Yes, I will admit that I like reality TV. It’s sad, but true. I just can’t get enough of Kitchen Nightmares or Master Chef in any country. South Africa is working on our own Master Chef and I know I will be glued. Come Dine With Me – South Africa is the funniest show on TV. Plus all of the Real Housewives. We are a bit behind here, but if I can catch one on TV, I am glued. Even the Kardashians, I love to hate them.

5. Little Ava – I know, sounds so cliché to say my kid takes me to a happy place. In one year, she has taught me so much about myself and more about love than I could have ever imagined. She’s made my marriage even stronger and taught me about patience. When I put her to sleep, I want to wake her to play some more. Even though I don’t, and it’s not always smiles and giggles as she can also take me to an unhappy place quite quickly. But, this little person makes me so happy. When I get home from work she is jumping up and down in her daddy’s arms, waving both hands as fast as she can. In those tiny few seconds, the world melts away and I am in a happy place.

Look at her this morning…

a bit blurry, it's hard to take a nice photo of a moving toddler on your iPad

This little miss makes me so happy.

  1. Wow! Cute! My faves are the Matthew Williamson Lace and the Lover Christina Lace. Very cute. Definitely a closet reality TV junkie. Can’t get enough of the crazy housewives of OC, BH, and NJ. :) Skype is the best. My dad spends so much time overseas and we talk regularly. It’s great. If our kids sweet moments can’t take us to our happy place, then that is really sad. Granted, mine also take me to my unhappy place sometimes (I hate to say that), but when they are in good moods and snuggly, it’s magical.

    • @natalie1 The Matthew Willamson lace is also my favorite. I just need a few extra $$$ and an invite to a fabulous party… G

  2. Oh. My. Fashion. Those dresses are fantastic! Your little girl is adorable. My girls take me to my happy place too. But when they don’t – shoe shopping, coffee, wine….yes please! Thanks for linking up again AND for sharing next week’s prompts with your readers!

I think you should go with 5 Pictures that Reflect the Essence of You. I’m considering that one too because I do blog about my kids a lot, so I think it would be fun to put up some photos of their old Mom. Ok, I’m not really that old ;-) “See” you next week!

    • @MTDLBlog It’s a shame I don’t have more old photos of myself here in South Africa. Will try to dig up a few. Thanks for another great week!

  3. I love a good read and am right in the middle of ‘The Hunger Games’ – so behind reading the popular books, I know. And your sweet little girl is just too adorable. Love all the happy list posts today!

    • @almostallthetruth Don’t worry, I just finished The Hunger Games in January. Feels like I am always the last to know about popular books as well. Thanks for stopping by!

  4. And now I’m in love with that little red 30th b-day dress too! I would add to the list – music. There are certain songs that just lift my spirits no matter how down I am. Hey, that might be a good list category – 5 songs that lift my mood?

    • @KimSiegal The only reason I am debating not to cut off our DSTV (cable) is because of the Modern Country music channel. No commercials and always playing my favorite. Love music.

  5. I don’t have any children but my kitties certainly take me to my happy place. Hunger Games was addictive but so sad to me! Right now I am re-reading Great Gatsby (before the movie with Leo comes out). Yoga and baking would also be my additions. And that red dress is incredible :)

    • @MeganTwodelighted I also love baking! Going to try the macaroon recipe you posted yesterday. Will let you know how it goes. Might have to wait until winter though, as it’s summer here and our rainy season.
